Taipei experiences a variety of weather conditions, from humid summers to dry winters, unlike the constant tropical climate of Singapore.
Its temperate climate actually spans four seasons—spring (April), summer (May-September), autumn (October), and winter (November-March)—but it’s more convenient to look at Taipei as having just a long summer and winter punctuated by periods of rain.
Rainfall is fairly common in Taipei thanks to the monsoon cycles, and it can rain in just about any season with the difference being how heavy the rain is, and how long a shower can last.
Here's what to pack for each season in Taipei:
- Summer: Light, breathable clothing; it can get quite humid though not as humid as Singapore. Natural fibres like linen or cotton are great for keeping cool on a hot day, or you can tug on some athleisure for extra comfort as you sweat it out.
- Winter: Heavy jackets and warm socks, as it tends to be dry and chilly. Denim jackets or puffer coats are great for layering without getting too warm as you can get pockets of sunshine even during winter.
- Rainy Seasons: Always carry a raincoat and an umbrella due to frequent showers. If you’re travelling during a period where typhoons might touch down, rain boots or a rain coat might be a good idea too.
Travel Insurance
Taiwan is prone to natural disasters such as typhoons, heavy rainfall, and earthquakes, with the most recent incident being the April 2024 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck off Hualien on the eastern coast.
Several fatalities and over 900 casualties were reported following Taiwan’s strongest earthquake in 25 years, with severe aftershocks and tremors felt across the island, including Taipei. Landslides also occurred in hilly areas across the island including the famous Taroko Gorge National Park.
Though the impact wasn’t as great in Taipei as in Hualien, several buildings and storefronts in the capital city suffered damage – leaving residents and travellers shaken up. Plus, while a 7.4-magnitude earthquake is relatively rare, Taipei does occasionally experience lighter, shorter tremors due to the island’s setting on a tectonic plate boundary.
