Tiq Travel Insurance is a sound option for virtually every type or traveller — including those who have pre-existing conditions. Here’s how the plan works, what it covers, and how much it costs.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition, or wants to travel with someone who does, Tiq Travel Insurance should be your first choice.

It is one of the rare few travel insurance plans that offers this benefit (known as a ‘pre-ex plan’), and does so without skimping on the level of protection. Indeed, sums assured and coverage areas are the same between Tiq Travel Insurance pre-ex plan and its regular counterpart.

However, pre-ex plans cannot have COVID-19 coverage — here available as an optional add-on — added to it. Notwithstanding this restriction, how does Tiq Travel Insurance measure up to the competition?

To find out, we’ll be taking an in-depth look at this travel insurance plan, covering:

Product summary

Optional COVID-19 coverage

COVID-19 coverage for travel cancellation or postponement, trip curtailment, as well as medical, hospitalisation and quarantine expenses is available on an optional basis. You may purchase this add-on during sign up.

Option to cover pre-existing conditions

The plan is offered in two versions: pre-ex and non-pre-ex. The former allows claims arising from pre-existing medical conditions, such as heart disease, cancer, sleep apnea, epilepsy, etc. facilitating overseas travel for such individuals. However, pre-ex plans cannot include COVID-19 add-on.

Covers overseas medical expenses and follow-up treatment

This plan offers benefits for overseas medical expenses, as well as follow-up treatment at hospitals or clinics upon your return. You can also receive a daily allowance during hospital stays.

Travel and baggage benefits

Covers against common travel, trip and baggage risks, including delay of baggage, loss of personal items, travel delays, flight diversions, mis-connections, trip postponement, trip cancellation and bankruptcy of travel agency.

Automatic compensation for flight delays

You will be automatically compensated should your flight experience a delay of at least three hours. The compensation amount will be credited to your TiqConnect e-wallet, and you can cash it out instantly using PayNow or direct bank transfer. You’ll need to input your flight details when purchasing your travel insurance plan to enjoy this benefit.

Optional add-ons

Besides COVID-19 add-on, four other optional add-ons are available for child education, pet hotel, rental car and sports equipment, offering an added layer of protection in these areas.

Pros and cons

Pros Cons
Offers cover for pre-existing conditions Cannot have COVID-19 and pre-existing condition cover at the same time
Affordable and provides good value for money Plans with pre-existing cover cannot exceed 30 days in duration
Comprehensive suite of benefits, even at lowest tier
Optional COVID-19 cover allows more control over budget

As mentioned earlier, Tiq Travel Insurance is one of the rare few travel insurance plans that cover pre-existing conditions, so that is undoubtedly a huge plus for this category of travellers.

Other than that, another big pro found in Tiq Travel Insurance is its competitively priced premiums, made even more attractive by the fact that even the lowest tier plan retains most of the benefits found in the two higher tier ones. This helps to make Tiq Travel Insurance one that offers good value for money.

On the flipside, you cannot add COVID-19 cover to a plan with pre-existing conditions benefits. But perhaps the underwriting required to cover both categories of risk is simply untenable.

The premiums above were quoted based on a four-day weekend trip to Thailand. Our made-up family used for this example consists of two adults and two children.

Do note the above premiums are shown with a 30% discount applied.

As for COVID-19 cover, the premiums are charged on a per traveller basis, and this applies whether the individual is an adult or a child.

Considering that the sums assured for COVID-19-related claims are not lowered for children, this is fair.
