What makes a good travel insurance plan?

Whether you’re weighing the pros and cons of Direct Asia Travel Insurance or any coverage, you must ensure that the policy includes the following:

  • Comprehensive medical coverage: A good travel insurance plan should offer extensive coverage for medical expenses incurred overseas and upon returning to Singapore. For instance, Direct Asia’s travel insurance provides various plans, with coverage limits ranging from S$150,000 to S$1,000,000 for overseas medical expenses. This ensures that you are well-protected against unexpected medical costs during your trip.
  • Emergency medical evacuation: Emergency medical evacuation is a critical component of a robust travel insurance plan. The coverage should ensure that you can receive prompt medical attention and transportation in case of a severe injury or illness abroad.
  • Coverage for trip disruptions: A reliable travel insurance plan should include coverage for trip disruptions such as cancellations, delays and baggage loss. This way, you can manage the financial impact of unforeseen travel interruptions.
  • Personal liability protection: Personal liability coverage is essential for protecting yourself against claims of bodily injury or property damage to others.
  • Optional add-ons: Flexibility with optional add-ons can enhance the overall value of your travel insurance plan. For example, Direct Asia offers optional benefits such as coverage for extreme sports, sports equipment, foreign domestic helpers and COVID-19, allowing you to customise your plan based on your specific needs and activities.
  • Family benefits: For family travellers, it is important to have a plan that provides sufficient coverage for all members. Ideally, the policy should include the same claim limits for both children and adults.

If you have to cancel or postpone your trip for any valid reason, experience travel delay, have your baggage delayed or lose your baggage entirely, rest assured that you are sufficiently covered.

Do note that for any loss, damage or stolen personal effects, there are claim limits. For both family and individual plans, Direct Asia Travel Insurance offers a claim limit of S$500 per article, S$1,000 for laptops and S$200 for credit card fraud. There is also additional coverage for loss of money for family plans, up to S$1,000.

There’s even a pet hotel coverage of up to S$1,000 to cover any additional charges spent on your pet’s accommodation if you face any travel delay.

Family benefits

If you’re bringing your kids along on your trip with you, Direct Asia Travel Insurance might be your new go-to travel insurance because, firstly, it offers complimentary coverage for up to 4 children.

Though most family plans offered by insurers come at a fixed price no matter how many kids you have, they might still have extra costs beyond just paying for 2 adults. But for Direct Asia, you’re just paying for 2 adults if you opt for a family plan.

On top of that, the coverage for each child and adult is the same, meaning that your children are still able to claim up to the same claim limit as you, up to the limit set by the family plan. If you compare this to other travel insurance plans, some offer much lower coverage for children. This gives you the peace of mind of knowing that your children are sufficiently covered as well!

Optional benefits

Want to be covered for COVID-19 or extreme sports/activities? Direct Asia Travel Insurance offers a bunch of optional benefits as add-ons. Do note that covers are only available if you purchase their annual travel insurance plan, except for COVID-19 coverage which can only be added to single-trip policies.

Extreme sports/activities — You’ll have travel insurance for sports activities like skiing, snowboarding, diving, kayaking, white water rafting, jetskiing, ATV, go-karting, and many more. Check out our Extreme Sports Travel Insurance page to get the full list of activities.

Sports equipment — In the event of loss, theft or accidental damage to your sports equipment, it will be covered by Direct Asia. Some of these equipment include skis, snowboard, poles, scuba equipment, golf clubs and more. You can view the full list of items on our Travel Insurance with Sports Equipment Cover page

Foreign domestic worker — If you’re travelling overseas with your helper, you can add this optional cover for them to be included in your Family Plan. It will cover medical expenses, medical evacuation and repatriation, emergency phone charges, and trip cancellation, curtailment or delay. Get more details by visiting our Travel Insurance for Domestic Helpers page

COVID-19 — for single-trip policies only. Under this optional cover, you’re covered for any medical expenses overseas and in Singapore (within 48 hours of your return), including follow-up treatment. It also covers emergency medical evacuation, repatriation of mortal remains and local burial, as well as trip cancellation and curtailment due to COVID-19. Check out our Optional Benefits page to get more details.

Detailed review of Direct Asia Travel insurance coverage

Voyager150 review

The Voyager150 plan is Direct Asia's budget-friendly travel insurance option, offering essential coverage at an affordable price. It includes substantial emergency medical repatriation but falls short in other areas like personal accident/death, medical expenses, trip cancellations and baggage loss/damage. While this plan is limited to single trips and lacks an annual/multi-trip option, its low cost makes it worth buying for budget-conscious individuals who don't travel frequently.

Voyager200 review

Direct Asia’s Voyager250 plan strikes a balance between affordability and comprehensive coverage, making it an appealing choice for more frequent travellers. It is competitively priced and offers both single and annual trip options, providing better travel insurance for trip cancellation, personal accident and medical expenses, compared to the Voyager150 plan. With competitive pricing and a broader range of benefits, the Voyager250 plan is ideal for individuals who travel out of Singapore more than 3 to 5 times a year and seek a mid-tier insurance option that offers higher claim limits and coverage than the basic plan.

Voyager500 review

The Voyager500 plan is a robust choice for travellers seeking affordable yet comprehensive annual/multi-trip travel insurance coverage. This policy from Direct Asia stands out with additional perks like pet hotel cover, rental car excess, and sports equipment coverage. While its benefits are plentiful, the plan's value is primarily driven by its competitive pricing rather than high claim limits. This plan suits budget-conscious travellers who want extensive coverage without breaking the bank.

Voyager1000 review

The Voyager1000 plan is Direct Asia's premium annual-only travel insurance option, tailored for frequent travellers seeking extensive coverage for trip inconveniences. It offers exceptional value with 35% more trip inconvenience coverage than similar premium plans, while its premiums are 30-40% lower than the market average. Ideal for solo and family adventure enthusiasts, the Voyager1000 provides top-tier protection at a competitive price, ensuring peace of mind for all travel scenarios.
