Deciding between mobile providers? We compare the cheapest mobile data plans for fixed-term contracts in Singapore offered by Singtel, StarHub, and M1.
With 7 providers in the Singapore market dangling juicy data plans to vie for customers, the mobile data plan price war is now fully underway. And this is just the beginning. Another newcomer, TPG from Australia, looks set to enter the warzone later this year.
If you’ve been locked into a 24-month contract with the ‘usual suspects’ (Singtel, StarHub, and M1), it’s time to find out exactly when your contract ends – even if it’s still a few months away, it pays to do some research now.
Why should you consider a fixed-contract mobile data plan?
There are two main categories of plans currently on offer – the popular ‘No Contract’ and the ’12/24 months contract’ plans.
A general trend observed with the ‘12/24 months contract’ plans is that telcos normally give better offers (more data) if you stick with them for a minimum period. Telcos also tend to “reward” your loyalty of entering into a 24-month fixed contract with attractive discounts and offers on the latest smartphones.
Here are the cheapest fixed-contract mobile data plans in the market for light, moderate, and heavy users:
Price Plans for Light Data Users (up to 13GB/month)
FOR LIGHT DATA USERS | |||||
PROVIDER | MONTHLY PLAN | PRICE | TALK TIME | SMS | DURATION |
Singtel | 3GB Base Data + 2GB + 5GB = 10GB | $20 | 150 mins | 500 free | 12 months |
M1 | 5GB | $20 | 100 mins | 100 free | 12 months |
StarHub | 3GB + 10GB* = 13GB | $50 | 100 mins | $0.0535/SMS | 24 months |
*All customers who sign up before 1 Feb 2019 can continue to enjoy free Unlimited Weekend data and 10GB for 24 months.
For light data users, the clear choice is Singtel. Priced at $20, it offers twice as much data compared to M1, with more talk time and SMS. Moreover, Singtel also has an attractive menu of ‘add-ons’ for you to customise your plan with.
M1 also has its own arsenal of perks, including unlimited calls to 3 M1 numbers (you have to nominate 3 numbers). Also take your data overseas with the M1 Data Passport from $10/month. On top of that, get up to 30% off your subscription with a multi-service saver and earn Sunperk points to offset your bills or redeem other goodies.
Based on the table above, StarHub will give you the most data at 13GB. However, the price plan is $50/month for 2 years but you’re entitled to get a new phone at a special price.
If you are hungry for more data, StarHub has a range of various add-ons. You can ‘surf like a boss’ and watch as many movies as you desire on Netflix all weekend for just $6/month.
Price Plans for Moderate Data Users (15GB – 40GB/month)
FOR MODERATE DATA USERS | |||||
PROVIDER | MONTHLY PLAN | PRICE | TALK TIME | SMS | CONTRACT |
Singtel | 6GB Base Data + 4GB + Free 10GB = 20GB | $36.05 | 150 mins | 500 free | 12 months |
M1 | 15GB | $40 | 100 mins | 100 free | 12 months |
Singtel | 8GB Base Data + 22GB + Free 10GB = 40GB | $46.75 | 150 mins | 500 free | 12 months |
M1 | 30GB | $50 | 100 mins | 100 free | 12 months |
StarHub | 30GB + 10GB* = 40GB | $75 | 300 mins | $0.0535/SMS | 24 months |
*All customers who sign up before 1 Feb 2019 can continue to enjoy free Unlimited Weekend data and 10GB for 24 months.
Singtel seems to be the clear winner as well for moderate data users. Singtel offers two plans for 20GB and 40GB per month, priced at $36.05 and $46.75 respectively. It makes sense to go for the slightly more expensive plan, where paying a marginal amount of $10.70 more per month will get you an extra 20GB of data.
M1 seems to be the least competitive for moderate data users. M1 makes sense only if you sign up for multiple lines (for example, for your entire family), in which case you can then get as much as 30% off your total subscription fees.
StarHub’s 2-year plan could be worth a consideration if you’re looking for good phone deals to go with your fixed contract (filter by ‘$75 2-year Plan’ to see the eligible models).
Price Plans for Heavy Data Users (55GB – Unlimited)
FOR HEAVY DATA USERS | |||||
PROVIDER | MONTHLY PLAN | PRICE | TALK TIME | SMS | CONTRACT |
M1 | 13GB Base Data + 42GB = 55 GB | $73.50 | 150 mins | 500 free | 12 months |
M1 | Unlimited | $98 | Unlimited | Unlimited | 12 months |
StarHub | 60GB + 10GB* = 70GB | $105 | 500 mins | $0.0535/SMS | 24 months |
*All customers who sign up before 1 Feb 2019 can continue to enjoy free Unlimited Weekend data and 10GB for 24 months.
For heavy data users, M1’s unlimited plan is a godsend. At a flat $98 per month, you can enjoy unlimited data, talk time, and SMS.
If you need a new phone at a discount, then StarHub is the sensible choice; you only need to pay an extra $7 more per month (compared to M1’s plan at $98/mth) for 2 years.
Bottom line
To sum up, decide how much data you need each month and pick the right plan. The amount saved from picking the right plan will add up over the next 3-4 years – and could possibly be enough for you to upgrade to a brand new phone.
